THE SHIP & FACILITIES

The German Roald Amundsen is a two-masted brig that was built in 1952 in Hamburg, Germany. It was originally built as a fish lugger but was used for the East-German Navy until 1992, when it was decommissioned and sold to private owners that converted it into a sail ship. Today, the Roald Amundsen is used for sail training programs, allowing young people to learn valuable life skills and teamwork while experiencing the adventure of sailing on a tall ship

Sanitary facilities

There are three toilets and three showers on board that get cleaned daily. To save water, you will probably not shower daily, but hot water is generally available.

There are also washing machine and dryer on board that are used to wash dirty towels and cloths everyday, but if you ask kindly, your clothes can also be washed maybe once a week or so. Generally, I would recommend to only take old clothes that can get dirty or will be thrown away after the trip.

Kitchen and food

If you are joining the ship for the first time, there is a very high chance that you will be performing kitchen duty every few days. Sometimes, but not always, there is a cook on board, who is in charge of the kitchen. For some trips, the meal planning is taken over by one or two crew members. Dietary wishes, restrictions or allergies are always taken into account. At night, bread and breadroll dough is prepared and baked in the early morning, ready to be served for breakfast at 7.00 a.m. Warm lunch is at 1 p.m. and at 4 p.m. there is generally a break for coffee and cake. Dinner at 6 p.m. is generally “Brotzeit”, meaning bread and usually some leftovers from the earlier meal. Coffee, tea and water are always free and accessible.

For any extra snacks or beverages, like soft drinks or chocolate bars, they are not included in the price but can be consumed from the kiosk.
